Knebworth Park has been Britain's biggest back garden for fifty years. Here are the shows people still talk about, what happened on the roads each time, and why the six Oasis nights in September 2027 are the largest thing the park has ever attempted.
the seventies: Pink Floyd, the Stones, Led Zeppelin
The Knebworth festivals began in 1974 and hit their stride with Pink Floyd in July 1975, then the Rolling Stones in 1976 in front of a crowd estimated well over 100,000, and Led Zeppelin's two Saturdays in August 1979, the band's last British shows with John Bonham. The park's appeal was the same then as now: a natural bowl in front of the house, a big lawn, and a motorway next door. The motorway was also the problem, and it has been ever since.
1986: Queen
Queen closed the Magic Tour at Knebworth on 9 August 1986 in front of about 120,000 people. It was Freddie Mercury's last concert with the band. The crowd was the largest the park had held for a single show at that point, and the stories of the traffic afterwards are still told.
1996: Oasis
On 10 and 11 August 1996 Oasis played to 125,000 people a night, 250,000 over the weekend, after roughly 2.5 million people applied for tickets: about one in twenty of the adult population. The Prodigy, Manic Street Preachers, The Chemical Brothers, Ocean Colour Scene, The Charlatans, Cast, Dreadzone and Kula Shaker supported. It remains the reference point for every British outdoor show since, which is why the 2027 return is six nights rather than two.
2003: Robbie Williams
Robbie Williams played three nights in August 2003 to about 375,000 people, then the biggest concert run in British history. NME reported nine hours of traffic jams, thousands of fans missing the show, and five hours to get off site afterwards. Nothing about the park's geography changed between 2003 and now.
Sonisphere, Liam Gallagher, Iron Maiden
Sonisphere brought metal festivals to the park between 2009 and 2014, with the Junction 7 slip roads closed for days and one exit route running through the Deer Gate to Old Knebworth Lane. Liam Gallagher played two nights in June 2022 to 170,000 people, with National Highways reporting long delays on the A1(M) from early afternoon and the parking contractor building an extra park-and-ride overnight. Iron Maiden played on 11 July 2026 to about 50,000: fans reported almost four hours queuing to get into the car parks and three to five hours to get out, and Knebworth House said afterwards it was investigating.
2027: six nights of Oasis
Saturday 11 and Sunday 12, Saturday 18 and Sunday 19, Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 September 2027, licensed for 125,000 a day: three times the 1996 run, and two and a half times the Iron Maiden crowd on each of six days. The promoter's plan leans on late trains from Stevenage and the biggest coach operation for a single event in the UK. The lesson of every show above is the same: the park is easy to get into on paper and hard to get out of in practice, because everything funnels through one roundabout. We are on the other side of the estate at Old Knebworth, which is the whole reason our field exists.
